VCU Grads PhD-bound!

Four graduates of the MA Program have been accepted into PhD programs.
Jake Hertz (MA/Research ’17) was accepted into Boston University’s competitive, nationally ranked program in English to study medieval literature. He was awarded a fully funded, five-year fellowship by the department. After receiving his Master’s degree in May, he looks forward to continuing to explore the intersection of the visual arts and late medieval poetry as he works toward his goal of becoming a professor of English literature.

Alex Jones (MA/Research ’16) was accepted by both Temple University and VCU and chose the VCU MATX PhD Program. His primary focus will be on 19th-century print culture, specifically the illustrated history of the serial works of Henry James and James’ relationship with art and artists whose work accompanied certain stories in his serialized fiction: John LaFarge, who illustrated the Collier’s Weekly (1898) publication of “The Turn of the Screw,” and Alvin Langdon Coburn, James’ photographer for his collected New York Edition.

Julian Neuhauser (MA/Research ’17) will be attending King’s College, University of London to pursue a PhD in English literature. Julian was awarded the King’s College International Post Graduate Research Scholarship that includes full tuition and a generous stipend for the term of the degree. Only eight such awards across all departments at King’s College London are given, and Julian competed with students from around the world for one of eight spots. His research will focus on literature surrounding the English colonization of North America.

Aisha Shethwala (MA/English ’16) has accepted a fully-funded offer to Northwestern University in Chicago, the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. There, she will study for a PhD in History with a concentration on Asia, specifically the cultural interchanges via land and maritime trade, migration, and conquest along the northwest Indian peninsula and the Iranian plateau during the medieval Islamic period. Whew!

Congratulations Jake, Alex, Julian and Aisha!
