From the Chair

Headshot of David LatanéOver the past three decades I have been lucky to witness the department grow to become a research-intensive unit that has produced many fine scholarly books and essays, as well as much excellent creative work. We are proud that we have not lost our focus on the classroom and on the extraordinary students we are fortunate to have—English majors, graduate students, and many others who are drawn to the literatures we teach.

Our goal is the pursuit of excellence in the creative arts, literature, criticism and linguistics, community engagement and service learning, technology and new media. As our mission statement reads:  “As scholar-teachers, the English faculty are committed to balancing teaching, mentoring, and research as mutually beneficial endeavors. Through research and teaching, our faculty work to expand knowledge of language, literature, and various expressive media in local, national, and global contexts.”

British Virginia

British Virginia logo: simply the words

British Virginia is a VCU-hosted series of scholarly editions of documents touching on the colony. These texts range from the 16th and 17th-century literature of English exploration to the 19th-century writing of loyalists and other Virginians who continued to identify with Great Britain. Editions appear principally in digital form, freely downloadable.
