Current MATX PhD Making a Difference (and the News)
December 23, 2020
First year MATX PhD, Aurora Higgs, has been working hard both in and outside of the classroom. Higgs, a 30-year-old Black trans activist in Richmond and prison abolitionist, has poured herself into helping her neighbors on a multitude of specific causes during the pandemic. Higgs regularly posts on Instagram, where she has nearly 4,000 followers, having asked for direct donations to a Black transgender femme on the verge of homelessness, money so a friend’s mom who was diagnosed with cancer could pay the medical bills, and a call for support through GoFundMe drives to help a trans woman avoid harassment on public transportation by providing money for a down payment on a car. For a more complete report on Aurora's ongoing efforts, please see the news article in The Richmond Times-Dispatch.
