English Alum Cory MacLauchlin’s Biography to Become Feature Film

February 9, 2017

Butterfly in the TypewriterA Butterfly in the Typewriter, Cory MacLauchin’s biography of John Kennedy Toole, Pulitzer prize-winning author of A Confederacy of Dunces, will be made into a feature film starring Susan Sarandon and Nick Offerman. The movie, shot entirely in the New Orleans area, is targeted for a 2018 release.

Toole unsuccessfully sought publication of his novel, finally declaring it hopeless, and stored the manuscript in a box. Years later he committed suicide. The manuscript was resurrected by Toole’s mother, who found support from Walker Percy who spearheaded its publication. Twelve years after Toole’s death the novel won the Pulitzer Prize.

In writing A Butterfly in the Typewriter, MacLauchlin interviewed friends, family and colleagues and drew on the Toole archive at Tulane University. The result is a well-researched, fascinating read of one of the most unlikely stories in American literature.

British Virginia is a VCU-hosted series of scholarly editions of documents touching on the colony. These texts range from the 16th and 17th-century literature of English exploration to the 19th-century writing of loyalists and other Virginians who continued to identify with Great Britain. Editions appear principally in digital form, freely downloadable.
